When the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) needed to create a flawless, celebratory production worthy of inducting a national icon into its Hall of Fame, they turned to Phase 3 Productions. The task was to honour Don Wehby, the esteemed former CEO of Grace Kennedy Ltd. and dedicated public servant, at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. Our mandate was clear: provide an elegant, technologically seamless environment that matched the gravitas of the moment for 580 distinguished guests.
The challenge was to balance grandeur with intimacy, ensuring every element—from the video tributes to the live musical performances—was delivered with absolute clarity and emotional impact.
The Challenge
As the sole technical production provider for this high-profile gala, we faced a significant logistical and creative undertaking:
- Create a commanding yet elegant stage environment to serve as the focal point for the evening’s ceremonies and performances.
- Design and implement a comprehensive video system to display live camera feeds, tribute packages, and graphics simultaneously across multiple screens throughout the ballroom.
- Deliver pristine, reinforced audio for speeches, video playback, and live musical performances by legendary artists, ensuring every word and note was heard with perfect clarity.
- Execute a complex multi-system setup within a tight venue turnaround time, requiring flawless coordination and power management.
The Execution
Our dedicated team engineered an integrated technical environment that supported the evening’s narrative without ever overshadowing it.
The visual story was told across a dynamic canvas. We installed a commanding 20ft x 10ft LED screen at center stage, flanked by two 16ft x 9ft LED wing screens on goalposts. To ensure all guests had a perfect view, we supplemented with four (4) 85-inch plasmas on truss stands around the perimeter of the ballroom. This multi-screen approach allowed for powerful display of live ceremonies, heartfelt tribute videos, and speaker support graphics.
To immortalize the event, our video team operated a robust 4-camera shoot. Utilizing professional cinema cameras, we captured every angle—from wide ceremony shots to intimate inductee reactions—for both live switching on the screens and a high-quality archival recording of the entire banquet.
Managing audio for a banquet of nearly 600 guests, plus live performances, demanded a robust and nuanced system. We deployed a comprehensive package capable of delivering everything from the quiet dignity of speeches to the powerful vocals of the legendary Marcia Griffiths and the harmonies of Voices of Grace. A high-fidelity line array system ensured even coverage, while a digital mixing console and a suite of wireless microphones provided the engineer with total control for seamless transitions between each program element.
Our lighting design aimed to elevate the ballroom’s ambiance. Using our dynamic lighting fixtures, we provided elegant stage wash and key lighting for presenters. Strategic uplighting around the room enhanced the decor, and ambient lighting set the perfect mood for a formal gala, transitioning smoothly from ceremony to celebration.
We constructed a clean, professional 24ft x 12ft x 2ft stage to define the presentation area. The entire technical production—from LED walls to catering outlets—was powered reliably by a single, ultra-silent 70kVA generator, ensuring no flicker or interruption during this landmark event.
The Result
The successful execution of an event of this scale is a testament to meticulous planning and expert collaboration. Under the leadership of Project Coordinators Ashlé Henriques and Kimone Minott, our team leads—Ricardo Gopaulsingh (Lighting), Joell Channer (Audio), Brian Lewis (Video), and Oral Fraizer (Power) — brought together a unified team to deliver a flawless production.
The technology served its purpose perfectly: remaining invisible until called upon, then performing flawlessly. The result was an evening where the focus remained entirely on celebrating Don Wehby’s immense contributions to Jamaica. Speeches were heard, performances were felt, and visual tributes resonated deeply, leaving guests immersed in a professionally produced experience worthy of a Hall of Fame inductee.
